The women were probably born between 1869 and 1883 (Wu 1959:139-140). They were the sisters of Wu Lien-Teh (the uncle of my paternal grandmother). I had no idea they were educated by a British woman (apparently known as "Missy Merah" [Miss Red]) and that English education for girls in my family began a generation earlier than I had thought.
